Psychedelic Journey Curation

Are you interested in using psychedelics in a beneficial setting, but don’t want to drop thousands on clinical psychedelic-assisted therapy?

Do you think you could probably handle a trip at home, but are a bit nervous and don’t know how much you should take, or what things you should consider before trying it?

Psychedelics (such as psilocybin mushrooms, LSD and peyote, as well as therapeutic peri-psychedelics like ketamine and MDMA) are powerful tools that have helped millions of people, but they should be approached with care. As a way of providing knowledge, helping people, and earning income to support my activism and public education work, I am offering psychedelic curation and guidance services.

Whether you’re planning on doing it with a friend or alone, it’s essential to go into the experience prepared with the knowledge and tools you need to have the best chances of a beneficial experience. Even if you’re about to trip for the fiftieth time, there’s always something new that can be learned about how to best curate a positive experience.

Journey Curation Packages

With these sessions, I won’t be there during your trip, but I will help you set it up for success. We will work collaboratively to get you ready and make sure any fears and anxieties you have are reassured, so you can go into the session with excitement and confidence (though some nervousness is normal, even for experienced psychonauts!)

Package options (see below for an explanation of each session):

Dr. Hilary Agro, MA, PhD
Anthropologist and Journey Guide

I’m an anthropologist, researcher, harm reductionist and community organizer. I’ve built an audience of 120,000+ on social media based on my activism and public education work on psychedelics and other drugs, as well as sociopolitical analysis.

I never really intended to become an “influencer” or anything like that. I am just very loud about social justice and critical thinking, and in an environment full of grifters and bullshitters, people really respond to those of us trying to inject some compassion and critical thinking into public discourse.

I’m based in Toronto but meet with people via video call.

Details of what each session includes:

Experience Curation

One hour-long video call where we discuss what your goals are. I will answer any questions you have about dosing, effects, risks, benefits. Together, we will build a plan to set up your journey for the best chances of success, based on what makes you feel most comfortable.

Research Mode

One hour-long research session, conducted on my own, where I look up peer-reviewed research on any questions you have that I am unable to answer off the top of my head (which, don’t worry, I have a ton of knowledge!). I take my role as an academic and as a guide seriously, and that means not bullshitting my way through things I’m unsure about. Navigating research, knowing how to read and interpret papers, knowing where to look on experience forums when there are gaps in the literature and discerning trustworthy information from pseudoscience—these are all skills I’ve developed over my years as a researcher, and they are skills that a troubling amount of psychedelic guides seem uninterested in honing.

Post-Journey Integration

One hour-long video call where we discuss your experience, the insights that came out of it, and talk about possible next steps for your journey. I will ask you reflection questions that you can carry forward (which, if you’re open to it, can be challenging!), and suggest mental health or other resources to help contextualize your self-discovery.

Microdosing Consultation

One hour-long Zoom session where we discuss what your goals for microdosing are. I will answer any questions you have about dosing, effects, risks, benefits. Together, we will build a plan to set up a microdosing regimen for the best chances of success, based what on your goals are.

Microdose Check-In

20 minute video call where we talk about how things are progressing and make adjustments as needed.

NOTE: I will be raising my prices once the first three months of clients are booked, so now is the best (and cheapest!) time to book.

In-person Guided Journeys: If you are in the Greater Toronto Area and are interested in an in-person guided session, contact me for details.

My goals for offering these services:

1) There’s a ton of interest right now in psychedelics, and a lot of people who are looking for guidance–including many who have asked me for help, because of the public education work that I do. There are also a lot of grifters out there who are practicing “shamanism” in harmful, dangerous and culturally appropriative ways.

2) The idea of being able to make a bit of income by helping people is so rewarding. I know the benefits of psychedelics, and I love guiding people in ways that emphasize their own power to grow and heal themselves in relationship with plant medicines.

I aim to be transparent about the potential risks and how to mitigate them, the potential benefits and how to maximize them, and give you the knowledge and confidence you need to be your own guide. You are the person who knows yourself best—I am there to answer questions and give you advice for how to best begin, or build on, your journey with psychedelics.

Note: I am not a therapist! I am not offering therapy services. Integration sessions will help you to plan how to orient your discoveries and insights towards your own personal development. I can offer resources for further mental health supports (including free resources and toolkits compiled by licensed therapists), but I know the limits of my skills and I am careful not to give advice I am not qualified to give. You should be suspicious of any psychedelic guide who is not forthcoming about their training and the limits of their knowledge.

That said, I have nearly 20 years of experience with psychedeIics, including journey guiding, working in harm reduction at festivals and in street contexts, and qualitative ethnographic research, including my PhD dissertation. I also have a commitment to ethics that I hope is shown through my body of activist work as a good indicator of how strongly I feel about wanting to help people—and you’re probably here because you’re familiar with my work already.

You can reap the benefits of my lifetime of intense ADHD hyperfocus, and know that your money is going towards funding my research, activism, and food for my kids.

FAQ

Are you a registered therapist?

No.

Is this legal?

Yes. I am not providing you with any substances. I am only offering educated advice, so yes, it’s legal.

Can I personalize a plan by picking and choosing which sessions I want included?

Sure! I’m here to provide whatever sessions you feel you need, so we can figure out what works for you.

How do I transfer the money?

I currently only take PayPal (from anywhere) and e-transfer (in Canada).

What if I have a bad experience?

The point of curation is to do everything we can to prevent negative experiences. But the truth is, there is no way to guarantee that a psychedelic experience will be comfortable the entire time. Psychedelic journeys are most commonly enjoyable, but they are not always sunshine and rainbows. However, it’s important to remember that experiences that are uncomfortable can still be hugely beneficial–indeed, many people I have interviewed for my research said that some of the most profound insights they got from psychedelic experiences came from their most difficult trips.

The most important thing to do is make sure that you feel safe, which is a significant part of what we’ll talk about during the curation session. If you trip in a safe environment and go into the experience with an open mind, it’s highly likely that you’ll have a beneficial experience.

What if I’m on a daily medication (e.g. SSRIs, ADHD meds, etc)?

I can offer resources, based on peer-reviewed research, on drug combinations so you can make the best informed decision for yourself. I am not a doctor and strongly recommend that you consult with a medical professional before taking any new drug if you are unsure, as I am not here to offer medical advice. That said, I am also aware that finding a medical professional you trust and who has non-stigmatizing knowledge about psychedelics, MDMA, ketamine etc. is difficult. I will do my best to provide you with resources, but I will not give advice that is outside the scope of my knowledge. You know yourself and your situation best. Please always be careful when approaching any new substance, new source or higher dose, and doubly so when mixing two substances together.

What video call platform do you use?

For security reasons, my preference is the app Signal, which works on phones and desktop computers. WhatsApp and Zoom are also options.

Why should I do this with you?

I am a PhD candidate who has studied psychedelics and harm reduction for over 15 years. Am I a goddamn dirty hippie? I mean, yes, of course, but I come from a background of rigorous research and tend to be skeptical of overly woo-woo approaches to psychedelics, while maintaining a deep appreciation for the beauty of human mystical and transcendant experiences. What I’m trying to do is combine academic rigour with a love of joy and healing to help people in a way that’s beneficial to others, and be fairly compensated for my labour so I can support my family and do this work long-term.

Where can I find, uh, you know what?

Unfortunately, I am not able to help with acquiring medicines.

Can I experiment with psychedelics on my own, without a guide?

I believe everyone has the ability within them to do their own research and set up for success. You do not “need” a guide per se, and anyone who tells you you absolutely do or who fearmongers about how dangerous “recreational” psychedelics are is trying to make money off of instilling helplessness in people. That said, psychedelic journeys are a serious undertaking, and your safety is important. To do things properly and minimize risks you DO need a good amount of knowledge and preparation, so using my services is one way to save yourself all that research hassle, and to feel cared for during the process. Care and knowledge transfer are the best!

What is the money going towards?

  • paying my rent
  • food and other basics for my kids
  • my organizing & activist work
  • my public education work

I’m not at all interested in getting rich off of this, but I do have rent, bills and child care to pay for. Also note that a lot of extra labour goes into these services, including emailing to schedule, research I do on my own, answering questions, etc.

What if I can’t afford your services?

In some cases we can arrange a labour exchange: there are a few things I need help with (lit review work, website stuff, video editing), so we can trade an hour of each others’ time.

Otherwise, part of the reason I’m doing this is to make enough money to support all work I do providing harm reduction education for free – so check out some of the DIY psychedelic resources I’ve made, and stay tuned for more!

What are your qualifications?

What languages are your services available in?

English and Spanish.
